The Choirmaster
& Principal Organist
SERGIO MILITELLO is one of the most interesting musicians on the international scene for his musicianship and interpretative ability.
He is a composer, choirmaster, concert performer (organ, piano, harpsichord) and teacher.
As composer, Sergio Militello has written various instrumental music (for chamber orchestra and symphony orchestra) and vocals compositions, including his sacred works: liturgical songs, organ music, choral motets, masses, hymns, music for soloist instrumentalists and organ, works for soloist singers and chamber orchestras; he has also written transcriptions and harmonisations of sacred songs.
His compositions are performed in Italy and in other countries. In 2003 he received appreciation from the Holy Father John Paul II for one his work composing. In 2011 he performed an organ concert dedicated to the Blessed John Paul II in the famous Marian Basilica of Krakow (Poland).
In preparation for the “Great Jubilee” of 2000, he planned and directed several travelling choir concerts known as the “Jubilee Concerts”.
He has published CDs and musical scores for choirs and for the organ with well known publishing labels.
He has founded various musical festivals including the National Festival of Sacred music: “Music: a place of encounter”. He is also an expert in Liturgical Musicology, and gives conferences (also on the radio), carries training sessions and writes essays on the subject.
Since 2003 he is the Director of the "Diocesan Institute of Sacred Music" of the Archdiocese of Florence.
Since 2006 he is the Regional Head of “Liturgical Music” for the "National Liturgical Office" of the Italian Episcopal Conference in Rome.
As organist performer he has concertized in several countries throughout Europe (Italy, Switzerland, Germany, State Vatican City, Cezch Republic, France, Poland, Austria, Great Britain), Australia (Queensland), United States of America (District of Columbia, New York, New Jersey), Canada (Quèbec, Ontario), plays important instruments in the world, performs also concerts of inauguration and plays in international festivals; his name appears alongside other international organist as T.Koopman, G.Leonhardt, W.Rübsam ...
His performances are warmly received for their artistic quality distinguishing himself in the Art of Improvisation, a technique which continues a great international tradition (alongside names such as J. Guillou etc.) and he is now one of the best improvisers.
In 2012 he is planning a number of organ recitals in Europe, USA and New Zealand.
Sergio Militello is the Choirmaster and Principal Organist of the magnificient and great Florence Cathedral "Santa Maria del Fiore".
